The current Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts was housed in a 60+ year old building that no longer served the curriculum nor the student body. The new facility, designed by Design Ideas Group Architects, offers performing and fine arts training for students in grades
K-12. The campus is comprised of two buildings connected by a second floor walkway. The elementary school building will has a 1,500 SF studio theater and a small stage included as part of the cafeteria. The high school has an 800-seat auditorium, a 400-seat auditorium and a 3,600 SF black box theater. The auditoriums are each outfitted with rigging, stage draperies, stage lighting, sound and communication systems and seating. The performing arts wing of the high school includes a scene shop, costume shop, laundry, dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, lobby, loading/receiving area and storage.
THEATER DESIGN INC provided programing, theater planning and theater equipment/systems design. The school opened in November 2009.
